The job of the Lieutenant Governor is to be a part of four different councils/commissions. The first commission the Lieutenant governor sits on is the State Lands Commission which focuses on land management and development across California. The third council they sit on is the Boards of Regents of the University of California that makes decisions regarding all nine campuses in the UC System. The fourth is the California State University system that makes decisions regarding all CSU campuses throughout the state. The office of the Lieutenant Governor also supervises the Commission for Economic Development, which is an important commission that can generate and expand jobs, and the use of clean energy.

Green Party--Jimi Castillo

Jimi Castillo was born in Whittier, California. Among his Native American tribe he is known as the Pipe Keeper and also the one who leads the Sun Dance. As the candidate for the Lieutenant governor he is the representative of the Green party. He has military experience from serving as a marine in the Vietnam war. He shows much respect for his Native American people as the spiritual leader who supports native tribes and other Native American associations. He also cares much for the environment and is a strong advocate of environmental protection (policy). His interest are not just in the environment. He also carries a strong domestic policy for the good of the people.

Jimi Castillo--Positions

Domestic: His domestic policies are to fix the criminal justice system, establish better education system, and native rights. His criminal justice policies will one be more efficient. He believes that jail is ineffective and that sending on to jail and letting them back out is ineffective. There needs to be programs for criminals like parenting programs, medical programs (ex. psychology), and also cancelling of paroles. Many of the youth in jail do not have life skills and to make it by get involved in crime to get by. About 94% of the people who commit suicide in jail were mentally or physically ill. And paroles is supposed to be a chance for the person on parole to integrate into society, and with a constant watch that is impossible.

Education: School is another thing that must be changed. Jimi Castillo sees divisions among classes in schools, lack of life skills, and a lack of the arts. There is unfair treatment of people of different ethnicities or social classes. Many of the students should learn geography and more life skill classes. Most kids will not use what they learn in school today as a life skill. Also the art funds are being cut in most schools and he is fighting to stop that.

Personal: Last thing he wants to change is the respect of Native American land and their rights. For many years there has been toxic oil dumps near native lands, nuclear testing, and overriding of their rights. The toxic oil dumps and nuclear testing have been affecting the natives for many years and should not be allowed. Also by doing so the U.S. government is not respecting the Native American land rights. The Native Americans deserve their land after 500 years of resistance to European colonization.

Environmental: His environmental policy is to establish a stable atmosphere that humans, plants, and animals can live on, where on cannot live without the other. He is seeking to rid of both water pollution and air pollution. He seeks fund to find better renewable energy resources rather than oil which is polluting the air. He also wants to stop deforestation which promotes more CO2 in the atmosphere, because less trees means less photosynthesis (conversion of CO2 to Oxygen in plants).

Support Groups

As a member and donator for these groups Jimi Castillo has support from the Bear Clan society and the UCLA native American student association.

Apollo's Opinion

Personally, I would give my vote to the Green Party. I am a strong advocate of the supporting of the arts as well as his domestic policy in fixing the criminal justic system. I think his idea of more efficient jail and criminal system is innovative. I personally do not believe in global warming, however, I do support his other environmental policies like clean water and deforestation. So if I had to vote, it would be for him.

Republican Party--Scott Levitt

Scott Levitt has a very impressive history of what he’s done so far in his career. In the past he was a Sr. Accountant and Finance Manager at Cal- Coast Homes, Inventory and Special Projects Manager at Randall Foods, Operations Supervisor at Heinz Pet Products, Assistant Manger at Andiamo Restaurant, and Assistant Manager at Sales Paramount Camera Shop. He graduated from California State University Long beach and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management. Scott Levitt is a California Licensed Attorney, contractor, and Real Estate Broker. He has been very successful and showed a great amount of commitment to what he has done with his past occupations.

Scott Levitt--Positions

Immigration: Levitt believes that illegal immigrants are violating the United States and that action has to be taken as soon as possible. Majority of illegal immigrants are the parents of children who are U.S. citizens. The issue of what happens to the parents, who are illegal immigrants, comes up to par. Are the parents deported, leaving the children parentless?

Crime: Crime rates have been a huge issue for the state of California. The degree of punishment must be raised higher in order to effectively refrain from crime. Children must avoid taking such actions in crime related circumstances.

Education: California is facing issues with its education. Budget cuts have affected not only teachers, but the children and parents. All public schools should be taught in English because it is not fair for taxpayers to specifically focus on a particular child’s needs when California’s resources are not in a sufficient amount.

Taxes: Taxes have over the years eaten California alive. California will soon suffer the drawbacks of having an income tax. The solution is to have the state have a greater GDP. Social programs have to be reduced into smaller proportions despite lost in funding but still be able to manage easily.

Soupo's Opinion

I would vote for Scott Levitt for Lieutenant Governor because of his strong solid foundation of experience that will bring about the best leadership to California. His past occupations are highly impressive and show that he has the skills and knowledge in being elected as Lieutenant Governor. Levitt has taught law classes at Chapman University and Cal Poly Pomona. Academically, he’s well off and had even received his Masters Degree in Business Administration at only 22 years old. Scott Levitt is also a licensed attorney in the state of California, a member of the State Bar, the U.S. District Court, and was sworn in personally by Chief Justice Roberts into the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States, as well as a licensed real estate broker and general contractor. His motivation and determination to satisfy the citizens of this nation is of priority. He cares a lot about the future of the United States Of America and emphasizes taking action as oppose to sitting and watching, an attitude a winning candidate should have.

Democratic Party--Gavin Newsom

Gavin Newsom is the major candidate running for Lieutenant Governor of California from the Democratic Party. He is currently the mayor of San Francisco and has been in office since he was elected in 2003. He is running against Janet Hahn who is a member of the Los Angeles City Council. He is a strong supporter of the Environment and he possesses a strong Environmental Policy that focuses on the use of new energy sources throughout the state. His background of being a 42 year old, a member of the Catholic Church and a Democrat all contribute to the decisions and positions he takes on issues.

Gavin Newsom--Positions

Overall, Newsom has quite liberal views regarding different issues. With regards to marriage, he is an advocate and supporter of Same-Sex marriage, and back in 2008 although he was against Prop 8, his words were twisted and used in a support for Prop 8 campaign. Socially, Newsom has been heavily involved with helping decrease the percentage of homeless persons in the San Francisco area. He was able to establish two organizations/programs that serve to help the homeless people. Economically, Newsom believes that more revenue should be made towards the state as well as a high rate of exports to other states. However, on his website the only visible link under his policy is "Environment" and that is it. His stance on this is to advance California’s old school tradition of conserving resources and environmental policy through being the Lieutenant Governor. In his only policy titled "Environment" Newsom greatly focuses and emphasizes his planned work on the environment and he briefly touches on other of his positions and what he plans to do but only briefly.

Support Groups

A big known of group that supports Newsom is United Farm Workers (UFW). The United Farm Workers is a labor union created when two large groups were combined into this group. At first, this labor union focused on the rights of workers to a labor union for the farm workers of America. Candidate Newsom also has many well known Congress members who are endorsing him, among these are the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senator Dianne Feinstein.

Jesus's Opinion

If I were able to vote in the upcoming June primary elections for California Lieutenant Governor I would not vote for Newsom, nor would I vote for the other two candidates. I would instead vote for Janice Hahn because I like her as an overall candidate. I am very in line with her policies and support what she wants to do with the economy, education, the environment, and local governments. I think she is also a positive change because if she won, she would be the first woman to be Lieutenant Governor. He experiences as a women can also provide help for her policies and such. I greatly agree with her education policy and feel that she holds a strong policy compared to the candidate I researched, Gavin Newsom. She has a lot of local support and state-wide support through endorsements and in endorsements she can also hold her own in comparison to Newson's endorsements. I also support Hahn over Newsom becuase they agree in most everything else, and Hahn focuses more on education, which is what I really care about at this point since I am going to be there next year.
